Our Mission
To enhance the quality of urban life while strengthening community bonds that foster environmental stewardship, horticultural education, healthful living, recreation and rejuvenation.
History
The Winnemucca Community Garden is a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation operating an organic garden and arboretum. Initiated in 2002 as a 2.5 acre vacant lot donated by the city, the Winnemucca Community Garden has since blossomed into a valuable community space for small agriculture, education, recreation, and rejuvenation. Community gardens empower individuals, knit together a stronger community, beautify local areas, and produce clean and nutritious food, while providing valuable recreational and therapeutic opportunities. The WCG emphasizes the importance of making healthy decisions that will ultimately sustain environmentally responsible citizens for the Winnemucca community. The garden brings its supporters and participants a sense of self-gratification and accomplishment as the benefits of such an establishment are witnessed every summer and fall at harvest time. Through a generous grant provided by Nevada Parks and Recreation in 2006, the WCG completed an interpretive trail through six desert eco-systems. From the soothing sound of our mountain stream to the rejuvenating butterfly garden, the trail is an educational and recreational asset. The WCG is about growing -- flowers, vegetables, fruits, shrubs and trees and a community of people who can share their love of gardening while taking care of our small part of the earth.
