Health, Hunger, and Nutrition

Community gardens arose most prominently during World War I to provide families with basic food so more supplies could be shipped to troops abroad. What began as strictly a food security measure with these "Victory Gardens" has now blossomed into the community-minded gardens we see springing up across the country. However, the original goal of community gardens is as valuable now as it was 200 years ago. In 2007, 35.5 million people lived in households considered to be food insecure. Low-income Americans represent the bulk of that number. The goal of the Health, Hunger, and Nutrition branch of the garden is to improve the general nutrition of our community by increasing the availability and consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables. As a community garden, our resources in fighting hunger are abundant and our commitment strong. Several plots are allocated for donation to the Food Bank and the WIC and plot members are strongly encouraged to donate some of their harvest through the Plant a Row for the Hungry campaign. Furthermore, we are actively working to increase self-sufficiency in food production by creating gardens in apartment complexes and senior assisted living. From our Junior Gardeners Class to our Workshop on Canning, we strive to increase nutritional knowledge (and excitement!) at all ages.

Now go eat something green!
